Merino SW Worsted 4-Ply

from $6.00

Although I don’t often use super wash yarns for personal projects, they are practical in their place. Think baby clothes and socks, where super-softness and machine washability are key.

My students knit socks, hats and gloves for themselves in 5th grade, and this is my go-to yarn for those projects. It’s important to me that my students love making, aren’t troubled by problems with felting or splitting, and actually wear what they make. 0% itchiness and plant dyed colors that POP makes this a wonderful yarn for its purpose.

We hope you enjoy these 2 ounces and approximately 275 yards of Merino wool delight.

Creating super wash yarns involves a process of removing or reducing the scales that are characteristic of wool fibers. The scales are the reason wool can felt and feel itchy. The scales are removed through a chemical process, often chlorine, and then coated with a polymer, which makes the fiber super soft, machine washable and 100% non itchy. It also raises concern for environmental damage and worker safety. Many mills are actively working toward more sustainable, clean treatments to achieve the same super-soft, machine washable results, and there has been progress. The mill we purchase our yarns from is among those keeping a close eye on these developments and we’ll update our website as we learn more.
